Reacting to news of war in Ukraine
The brief was that they reflected on the devastation of war and displacement of families in Ukraine (we did this work close to the start of the war, after watching many clips of children talking about their experiences of sheltering from the bombs).
Students were asked to think about the impact of this and reflect it in their pose, which I then photographed. Students used blue wax marking crayons (the kind that loggers use to mark felled trees!) to cover the back of their printed out portrait.
They then taped the prepared portrait, face up, onto a sheet of cartridge paper and traced over the important lines with a biro. This transferred wax on the back of the portrait onto the cartridge paper. Students were encouraged to use the mark making skills that they had been learning in lessons in the previous term to develop depth to the work.
Finally, they used blue-black Indian ink to work into the background of their portraits to give a sense of darkness to the finished portrait, expressing the grief and sorrow that they felt about the conflict.
Work by: Bryan, Ethan, Fabio, Jayla, Theo, Ava, Zac, Jamie, Lara, Sam, Kiara, Emily, Eva, Ronnie, Clara, Frances, Kit, Angel, Benny, Oscar, Maia, Erin, Josh, Bella, Makesh, Eli, Asmin and Hamish, aged 11 and 12 (Year 7)
