Exploring the relegation of Black figures within European Art
Students re-created classic paintings (by white people of white people!) in the style of painter Kehinde Wiley who uses contemporary sitters from a range of ethnic and social backgrounds in the poses of the original historical, religious or mythological figures.
His images raise questions about power, privilege, identity, and above all highlight the absence or relegation of Black figures within European art. We welcome the discussion of these themes in GCSE and A Level Photography.
The images are made as digital collages using Photoshop.
This work builds student skillsets for editing techniques but also gives them the opportunity to think about and contribute to the dialogue around issues that affect their everyday lives as young people of colour or young people who are part of a diverse community.
